Don't trust, verify
In February 2025, the UK government issued a secret order under the Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, compelling Apple to create a backdoor into its encrypted iCloud services. This directive mandates Apple to provide UK authorities with access to all encrypted iCloud data, not just specific accounts, effectively challenging the company's commitment to user privacy and data security.
Apple's Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, introduced in late 2022, offers end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only users can access their data. Complying with the UK's demand would require Apple to undermine this feature by building a backdoor, a move that could set a dangerous precedent for global digital security. Critics argue that such actions weaken overall cybersecurity, as backdoors cannot selectively restrict access to only law enforcement, potentially exposing data to malicious actors.
This situation underscores the vulnerabilities associated with storing sensitive information in cloud services. While cloud storage offers convenience, it also presents risks, especially when governments can mandate access to encrypted data. Historically, cloud services have been targets for surveillance and data breaches. For instance, in 2013, leaked NSA documents revealed that iCloud was part of the PRISM surveillance program, allowing government access to user data stored in the cloud.
Maintaining backups exclusively in the cloud can make personal data susceptible to unauthorized access and surveillance. To enhance data security, individuals and organizations should consider alternative backup solutions that do not rely solely on cloud storage. Options include local backups to encrypted external drives or utilizing private, self-hosted storage solutions. These methods ensure that users retain full control over their data, reducing the risk of external access.
