🏝️ Plan B, Revisited
Building a Sovereign Escape Hatch in Costa Rica
A simpler, cheaper, and more honest path to optionality
A while back, I wrote about the idea of a “Plan B”—a second jurisdiction, a backup plan, an escape hatch if things ever go sideways.
At the time, I was exploring offshore options and, like many people, I ran into the same problem:
Too much complexity.
Too many middlemen.
Too many “experts” charging $20,000+ to fill out paperwork.
Since then, I’ve revisited the idea with a clearer lens—and a more Bitcoin-aligned mindset.
This post is the updated version.
Simple. Practical. No fluff.
🧭 What “Plan B” Actually Means
Let’s get one thing straight:
This is not about “escaping” the United States.
This is about optional sovereignty.
The ability to live somewhere else… if you ever need to.
That’s it.
No drama. No urgency. No fear.
Just options.
🌎 Why Costa Rica?
After looking at a number of jurisdictions, Costa Rica stands out for a few simple reasons:
Stable, long-standing democracy
No standing military
Close to the U.S. (easy flights)
Strong expat infrastructure
Territorial tax system
High quality of life
It’s not perfect—but it doesn’t have to be.
It just has to work.
💸 The Offshore Industry Problem
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Most offshore “solutions” are massively overcomplicated and overpriced.
What I found:
$15K–$40K (and higher) packages
Pressure to buy real estate
Push toward investor visas
Layers of unnecessary entities
All to solve a problem that can often be handled for a few thousand dollars.
This is where people get burned.
I’ve been there.
🧱 The Simple Strategy (That Actually Works)
Here’s the approach I wish I had followed from the start:
🟠 Step 1: Start as a Tourist
No commitments. No lawyers. No structure.
Just go.
Enter Costa Rica on a tourist visa (typically up to 90 days)
Rent a place
Live like a local
This is not a move.
This is due diligence.
🟠 Step 2: Pressure Test the Lifestyle
Spend real time in places like:
Nosara (wellness / surf / expat community)
Santa Teresa (younger, more energetic)
Escazú (more structured, closer to San José)
Test:
Internet reliability (important for my workflow)
Daily life logistics
Community and culture
Cost of living
You don’t really know a place until you live there.
🟠 Step 3: Add Structure Only If It Earns It
If—and only if—it feels right:
You have two clean options:
Option A: Digital Nomad Visa (fast, simple)
Good for 6–12 month stays
Minimal friction
Option B: Rentista Residency (the long-term play)
~$2,500/month income requirement or
~$60,000 deposit
No need to buy property.
No need to overcomplicate things.
🟠 What I Would Avoid
This is important.
If you take nothing else from this post, take this:
❌ Avoid the “Investor Visa” Trap
Requires ~$150K investment
Often tied to real estate
Pushed heavily by offshore firms
Why it’s a problem:
Illiquid
Forced capital allocation
Not necessary
You’re solving for freedom, not creating new constraints.
🧠 The Bitcoin Angle
This is where it gets interesting.
Bitcoin changes the equation.
You don’t need:
Local bank dependency
Complex offshore structures
Custodial risk
Instead, you can:
Hold wealth in self-custody
Access liquidity globally
Structure income as needed (loans, withdrawals, etc.)
Bitcoin is your base layer.
Jurisdictions are just layers on top.
⚠️ What This Is Not
Let’s be clear:
This is not tax evasion
This does not eliminate U.S. tax obligations
This is not a “move everything offshore” strategy
This is simply:
Creating a second option.
🧩 The Bigger Insight
The goal is not to “move to Costa Rica.”
The goal is to build:
Asymmetric optionality at low cost
A Plan B you hopefully never need.
But one you’re very glad you have.
🏁 Final Thought
Most people wait too long to think about optionality.
They wait until they need a Plan B.
By then, it’s harder. More expensive. More stressful.
Better approach:
Move slowly
Stay flexible
Keep it simple
And above all:
Don’t outsource your sovereignty.
✍️ Closing
This is something I’m continuing to explore in real time.
If you’ve gone down this path yourself—Costa Rica or elsewhere—I’d love to hear your experience.
And if you’re just starting to think about a Plan B:
Start simple.
You might be surprised how little it actually takes.
