The fundamental conflict between liberty and authority

This post was inspired by a Nostr note by Edward Snowden, an interesting follow to be sure and he is quite the advocate for digital freedom and privacy. Here’s the note:

So I read the first chapter and it was quite interesting, especially as you relate it to today’s society and political situation. It just goes to show that there is nothing new, only cycles that repeat, and when we forget history we are doomed to repeat it. I thought it would be helpful to summarize the key learnings (TLDR) of this reading and see how it applies to a Bitcoiner’s point of view. If you want to read it yourself, it’s free here. I was rather surprised that it aligns quite nicely and indeed there is a strong libertarian theme here in defense of the rights of the individual. Let’s dive in.

The first chapter of "On Liberty" by John Stuart Mill outlines the fundamental conflict between liberty and authority, and discusses the nature and limits of the power that society can legitimately exercise over the individual. This chapter serves as an introduction to Mill's broader examination of the role and importance of individual liberty in a free society.

This is akin to the core principles many Bitcoiners uphold, such as autonomy, privacy, and resistance to censorship.
