Introduction
"Anatomy of the State" by Murray Rothbard is a seminal work that dissects the nature, purpose, and actions of the state. Rothbard challenges conventional views and presents a compelling argument that the state is fundamentally an institution of coercion and exploitation. For those who value liberty, autonomy, and self-sovereignty, Rothbard's work is a crucial text. From a Bitcoiner's perspective, his insights resonate deeply, given the shared emphasis on decentralization, individual freedom, and skepticism towards centralized power.
Main Points of "Anatomy of the State"
What the State Is Not:
Rothbard begins by debunking the myth that the state is a benevolent institution acting in the best interests of society. He argues that the state is not a collective representation of the people, but rather an entity that imposes its will through coercion and violence.
What the State Is:
The state, according to Rothbard, is an organization that maintains a monopoly on the use of force within a given territory. It derives its revenue not through voluntary transactions but through coercion, primarily in the form of taxation.
How the State Preserves Itself:
Rothbard explains that the state uses a variety of means to maintain its power, including ideological manipulation, control of education, and alliances with intellectuals who justify its actions. The state fosters a belief in its legitimacy and inevitability, making its rule seem natural and necessary.
How the State Transcends Its Limits:
Despite attempts to limit its power through constitutions and laws, the state continually expands its reach. Rothbard discusses how states over time erode limitations and use crises to justify increasing their control over individuals. This is all too true, as I explored in this post:
What the State Fears:
The state fears any threat to its power, particularly from independent intellectual criticism and revolutionary movements. It responds to these threats with propaganda, suppression, and, if necessary, violence.
How States Relate to One Another:
Internationally, states interact based on power dynamics, often engaging in wars to expand their influence. Rothbard highlights the absurdity of the sanctity of treaties, as states do not truly own the territories they control.
History as a Race Between State Power and Social Power:
Rothbard posits that history can be viewed as a struggle between state power and social power. Social power represents voluntary, cooperative human interactions and productivity, while state power is the coercive force that seeks to exploit these interactions for its own gain.
A Bitcoiner's Perspective
Bitcoiners, who champion decentralization and financial sovereignty, find Rothbard's critique of the state particularly relevant. Bitcoin, as a decentralized digital currency, challenges the state's monopoly on money creation and monetary policy. Key points of alignment include:
Monopoly on Force: Bitcoiners view the state's control over currency as a coercive monopoly similar to what Rothbard describes. Bitcoin's decentralized nature removes the state's ability to inflate and control the money supply.
Self-Sovereignty: Rothbard's emphasis on individual autonomy resonates with the Bitcoin ethos of self-sovereignty, where individuals control their own financial destiny without reliance on state institutions.
Resistance to Coercion: Bitcoin represents a form of peaceful resistance to state coercion, offering an alternative that operates outside the traditional financial system and is immune to state interference.
Moving Forward: Shrinking or Eliminating the State?
Rothbard's radical vision of a stateless society might seem idealistic, but his arguments provide a foundation for considering how society could reduce state power. From a pragmatic standpoint, the focus could be on:
Decentralization: Embracing decentralized technologies (like Bitcoin) that reduce reliance on state-controlled systems.
Education: Promoting education that fosters critical thinking and skepticism towards state propaganda.
Localism: Encouraging local governance and self-reliant communities that can operate independently of central authority.
While completely eliminating the state may be a distant goal, shrinking its involvement in individual lives and promoting alternatives can pave the way for greater personal freedom and autonomy.
Conclusion
"Anatomy of the State" by Murray Rothbard is a profound critique of state power that aligns closely with the principles of the Bitcoin community. By understanding the state's nature and methods, individuals can better appreciate the importance of decentralization and self-sovereignty. Moving forward, the challenge lies in finding practical ways to reduce state interference and promote a society built on voluntary cooperation and individual freedom.

An anarchist outlook at the state is all good but what if we looked at the middle view?
What if we looked at the state neither as a benevolent force, nor an evil force, but more like a pressure cooker created by society itself.
An average Joe or Jane, perhaps better than most at being charming, finds him/herself up there. Now, they are a major part of The State.
The people below expect miracles, yet the frustrated runner ups expect a massively embarrasing failure.
Oppression is an easier tool to handle jealous enemies and to quiet the crowds, so it is reached for a little too often.
Slowly, they learn how to control the noise, and how to work less hard at a real solution. Some smart politicking will do.
Slowly, average joe becomes hated, and hateful.

The promise of Bitcoin decouples the access to free funds for Oppression. An evil liquor sworn to corrupt the most faithful politician.
Decouple the hands from a quick ease to the mental frustration, and only those who are worthy will take on the hardest of jobs.
A jobs measured not in dollar profit, but in how well one has fostered national and international kinship. A very hard metric to measure.
Only to feel.
